QUESTION
I am experiencing problems in tuning the twin cam engine in my Lotus Cortina after fitting new webers to it.
Can you please offer some advice where to start looking at this problem?

ANSWER
Assuming all the jet and choke sizes are correct, the float levels and fuel cut-off valve settings should be checked before attempting to change any internal components.
Details regarding setting the Weber fuel float levels can be found on the Lotus Marques web site here
After checking and ajusting the float levels, the next step is to carefully wind in the idle mixture screws until they bottom out and then unwind 3/4 of a turn.
This initial idle mixture setting will allow the engine to start and run so the engine can warm up.
Final adjustment to the idle mixture should be carried out when the engine is at normal operating temperature.
Ideally the idle mixture should be set with the aid of an exhaust gas analyser.
Alternatively Lotus Marques sells a Colortune sparkplug that allows you to view the flame colour (should be blue) inside the combustion chamber whilst the engine is running.
