QUESTION.
I am fitting a 711M tall block Lotus twin cam engine into an Elan Sprint and the cam cover hits underneath the bonnet.
What can I do to fix this?
W.M. - Adelaide
ANSWER.
With the standard engine installation that uses the Ford/Lotus 701M cylinder block, there are different engine mounts used on either side.
The engine mount on the induction side lifts the carburettors up by an additional 10 to 12mm so the air-box clears the foot-well.
As the block is taller than the original 701M cylinder block, the induction side engine mount maybe replaced with the same type used on the exhaust side of the engine.
For detailed information about engine mount dimensions and configurations see the engine mount data sheet in the technical information section.
To further increase the cam cover to bonnet clearance it is possible to install a thicker (17mm) spacer between the gearbox rubber mount and cross-member.
The introduction of a thicker spacer moves the rear of the gearbox upwards and the front of the engine downwards and in turn increases the cam cover clearance.
These thicker gearbox spacers are available from Lotus Marques and can be found in the gearbox product section.
And to complete the 711M installation, shorter exhaust mount spacers need to be used as the cylinder block is 0.250" wider and these are also available from Lotus Marques.
