QUESTION.
I have just imported a Lotus Excel into Melbourne, Australia and the local business tasked with the Australian Design Rules (ADR) and engineering compliance need the VIN details.
Could you please tell me where the vehicle identification number is located on the Lotus Excel?
D.J. - Melbourne, Australia
ANSWER.
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is stamped on a plate fixed on the right or left hand front wheel-arch under the bonnet.
This number is repeated on the chassis lower flange, behind the right front suspension tower, viewable from within the right hand front wheel-arch.

The seventeen characters of the VIN are coded in accordance with EEG directives as follows:
NOTES
1. Separate serial number sequences are used for the following groups of chassis market (character 12):
D
A,E,G,H,S.
2. For change point identification in Parts Lists, Service Notes, and Service Bulletins.
The following VIN characters ONLY will be quoted:
Domestic and Export - 5,6,12,14 to 17.
Example: A typical change point could be listed as follows:
89 D 2278 (Domestic)
89 A/E/G/H/S 0331 (Export)
Note that two numbers are needed to identify the single change point due to the different serial number sequences outlined in NOTE 1.
If a dash is used in place of the chassis market letter code, (e.g. 89 - 0331) this is the change point for all markets not otherwise listed.
