QUESTION.
I have a freshly rebuilt Lotus twin cam engine and would like to know the correct way to run-in the engine.
Could you provide the correct procedure?

ANSWER.
The engine should be fitted with a new oil filter and filled with fresh 20W50 mineral oil.
Be sure to read the product label carefully and choose a non-friction modified engine oil with an API specification of SF
DO NOT use a fully synthetic oil during this process otherwise the piston rings will not bed-in correctly.
The progressive running-in of a freshly rebuilt engine is important so as to establish the correct mating part wear pattern.
The Lotus Factory state the following procedure should be adhered to as follows-
"The process must be continued progressively during the first 1,000 miles (1600kms)
It is important during the running-in period that the engine is not overloaded, as would occur when ascending hills in top gear at low speed; always make use of the gearbox.
It is very important that the engine speed is kept moderate during the running-in period, both on the road and when stationary.
During the first 1,000 miles (1,600kms) DO NOT EXCEED an indicated engine speed of 3000rpm on the tachometer."
On completion of the first 500 miles (800kms), drain the engine oil and remove the oil filter.
Discard the oil filter and fit a new component then refill the engine with fresh oil.
At the same time be sure to carry out the following checks -
1) Check the ignition timing and adjust if necessary.
2) Check the engine idle speed and adjust if necessary.
