QUESTION
Recently I have experienced a vibration which is coming from the rear part of the chassis of my Elan S4 FHC
This noise occasionally appears when changing gears and the differential is loaded and unloaded quickly.
I have played around shimming the upper differential mountings with various thickness washers but the noise still persists.
What do you recommend to cure this problem?

ANSWER
From experience you need a minimum 3/16" clearance between the lower part of the differential (which is the joint of rear alloy housing flange to cast iron nose flange) and the chassis tray underneath.
This is sufficient to allow for differential movement as is its loaded and unloaded between gear-changes.
It maybe necessary to remove the shims between the upper differential rubber mount and the top of the alloy casing fixing points.
I would recommend installing 2" diameter washer by 1/16" thick and then check the clearance between the differential and chassis tray.
It maybe necessary to shorten the crush tube on the upper differential rubber mount to achieve the correct clearance.
