QUESTION
My Lotus Esprit turbo has a misfire and its been suggested that the Bosch ignition coil is faulty.
The RACV guy who looked at it (he mentioned he used to deal with racing engines) said that one of the cylinders is consistently not-firing (can't remember, either 3 or 4)
He also said all the sparks from all the cables are nowhere near strong enough and the coil should be changed to an HEI type - is this OK?..

If its one particular plug that consistently misfires, then the problem is more likely to be associated with one plug lead or possibly a faulty distributor cap.
I would suggest your Esprit needs closer examination to fully diagnose this particular problem.
If the coil is faulty, there is usually a mis-fire across all 4 spark-plugs and the engine may stop running altogether.
As your Lotus Esprit ignition system has been modified by Lotus Marques to a contact-less electronic type, it is necessary to check if the electronic module is capable of driving HEI coil.
HEI coils are usually low impedance (low resistance) compared to a regular HT coil.
Electronic ignition systems may be irreversibly damaged if they are not capable of delivering the extra current to a HEI coil.
