The outstanding handling of the Lotus Esprit is directly attributable to its light weight construction and fully independent suspension.
The rear suspension employs a tapered box section trailing radius arm on each side of the vehicle.
These same trailing suspension arms may be found on the Lotus Esprit S3 through to the Esprit S4s
Dimensionally they are identical but details vary slightly depending on whether inboard or outboard brakes are employed (and if ABS sensors installed - later SE, S4, S4s)
This trailing radius arm is used in conjunction with top and bottom tubular transverse links.
Lotus Esprit rear radius arm B084D4110J and B082D4111J
A cast alloy hub carrier houses a substantial bearing to support the steel hub and outboard drive-shaft.
The alloy hub also provides a mounting point for a concentric coil spring/damper unit.
On later models fitted with a Renault gearbox, the alloy hub has a mounting point for the disc brake caliper (plus a wheel speed sensor on ABS equipped vehicles).
The spring/ damper unit is overhung from the bottom rear part of the hub carrier, sharing the lower link pivot stud.
The fabricated steel radius arm is bolted rigidly to the hub carrier via four lugs in order to resist the drive-shaft and brake torque loads.
It also controls the rear wheel alignment, and transmit the thrust loads into the chassis and via a bonded rubber pivot bush.
Wheel alignment is adjusted by shimming at this pivot bush.
On the later Esprit S4 and S4s, the camber adjustment is provided by an adjustable length top link which is standard equipment.
Unfortunately the standard top link is fitted with rubber bushes at each end.
This design does to handle the torque (twisting load) imposed across the link very well.
Whilst the suspension constantly moves up and down, the constant twisting action eventually undoes the lock-nuts.
Lotus Marques stocks rear adjustable top links that have a spherical rod-end at each end that eliminates the inherent design problem.
These radius arms are now available from Lotus Marques and are zinc plated for maximum corrosion protection.
The radius arms are handed and therefore the following part numbers should be used to ensure the correct component is supplied.
Right-hand radius arm B082D44110J
Left-hand radius arm B082D40111J
