Lotus Marques offers an alternative clutch fork rubber gaiter A026Q6003 to suit the Ford 2000E gearbox as fitted to the Lotus Elan, Elan +2 and Lotus 7
This alternative gaiter may look very different but it offers generous overlapping flanges inside and outside the bell-housing.
These sturdy flanges locate the gaiter in the existing bell-housing clutch fork opening.
The multiple bellows construction offers greater flexibility and prevents the gaiter from being dislodged whilst the clutch fork is operated.
Installation of the new gaiter should commence by first checking the clutch fork is positively secured to the pivot pin by means of the correct spring clip.
With the clutch slave cylinder push-rod removed, the clutch fork should move freely backwards and forwards.
After removing the old rubber gaiter, the new gaiter should be slid onto the fork so the cut-out in the rubber engages with the fork channel.
Continue to apply pressure on the gaiter so the fork channel passes through the gaiter and exposes the clutch slave cylinder push-rod location hole – see above photograph
Once the gaiter is pressed on sufficiently to expose the push-rod location hole, it will automatically be secured to the fork in the operating position.
Next, internal flange should be carefully pushed through the opening so it spreads out on the inside of the bell-housing.
The external portion of the gaiter can then be gently manipulated to optimise the installed position within the bell-housing rectangular opening.
These rubber gaiters became commercially available after careful research and locating an overseas supplier who supplied quality automotive components.
In July 2007 the first rubber gaiter of this particular type was fitted to a Lotus Elan S4 owned by Geoffrey Lee.
Since then, numerous rubber gaiters have been supplied to Lotus owners in Australia and overseas.
Several clutch fork gaiters have been installed by Lotus Marques whilst Lotus vehicles have undergone various tasks in our workshop.
Some of the local Lotus owners who are recipients of this new type rubber gaiter include-
David Flynn - Elan S3 FHC
Barry Cady - Elan S3 FHC
Trevor Cannell – Elan S4 DHC
Geoffrey Lee – Elan S4 DHC
Bob Ridgewell – Elan +2
Pricing for the clutch lever rubber gaiter is $27.00 excluding GST
