Lotus twin cam tensioner sprocket 026E0707

This tensioner crankshaft sprocket 026E0707 is fully CNC machined from high tensile steel alloy 4140.
The sprockets have been subjected to carbo-nitriding heat treatment to produce a hard and durable surface to withstand the harsh environment of being in contact with the timing chain.

Lotus twin cam oil pick-up pipe and strainer assembly

If you are contemplating rebuilding a Lotus twin cam engine, then removing the oil pick pipe may result in damaging this fragile component.
The original component comprises Lotus part number A026E6089 and the strainer Ford part number 2370E6K656.
This oil pick-up assembly is usually found in  twin cam engines such as the 701M 6015 fitted with the later 6 bolt crankshaft and a lip seal on the real main journal.
Unfortunately this design used non-standard ultra-thin wall mild steel tubing that makes it prone to being crushed during the removal and installation process.

The new pick-up pipe assembly manufactured by Lotus Marques comprises of the following parts -
1) A custom designed conical adapter that is a press fit into the cylinder block.
This adapter has two flats milled on the conical section to allow easy removal and installation without crushing the tube.
The adapter also has a non-linear junction to prevent stress failure at the point where to tube joins the conical section.

2) Mild steel tube that is secured to the conical adapter by means of a bronzed joint.
The steel tube also has a washer bronzed half way along its length to act as a spring platform.

3) A high quality spherical bearing that secures the pick-up tube to the strainer housing.
The spherical bearing provides additional functionality where the strainer housing can move up and down the tube plus tilt the strainer so it locates correctly on the sump pan.
The spherical bearing is secured in a two piece housing by means of an internal snap ring.

4) A stainless steel strainer is clamped in position by means of a two-piece housing that also contains the spherical bearing.
The two piece housing is held together with a large circlip which can easily be removed to allow the strainer to be cleaned

Lotus twin cam follower sleeve 026E0324

This race specification cam follower sleeve is manufactured from spheroidal cast iron that has excellent oil retention and lubrication properties.
These are slightly longer at 1.200" and provide additional support to the follower skirt when 0.500" lift cams are installed.
NOTE - The standard follower sleeve has an overall height of 1.035"
When a standard camshaft with 0.375" lift is used, the standard follower skirt usually protrudes below the bottom of the sleeve at maximum valve lift.
This inherent design problem is not immediately obvious and reduces the contact surface area which in turn accelerates cam follower wear.
The new longer sleeves alleviate this problem and does not interfere with oil returning from the cylinder head to the sump.

Assembling a Lotus twin cam cylinder head with slightly longer follower sleeves helps reduce characteristic "barrel wear" on the follower skirt.

Lotus twin cam timing chain guide 026E0014

This timing chain guide 026E0014 is manufactured from a heat and oil resistant rubber compound that is ideally suited for automotive applications.
The manufacturing process commences by cutting the mild steel backing plate profile and fixing holes with a CNC water jet.
Cutting the backing plate with a Farley Magician Water Jet machine guarantees there is minimal distortion and the contact surface is perfectly flat.
The fixing holes are detailed using a custom countersink bit that has an integral spigot ensuring the locating hole and countersink are perfectly concentric.
After the fixing holes have been machined, the backing plates are bead blasted to provide an etched or keyed surface.
Preparing the steel surface in this way ensures optimum bond strength when the rubber compound is applied.
Multiple backing plates are then placed in a mould where the rubber compound is applied to the contact face.
The mould and backing plates are placed in an autoclave for two hours where the rubber compound is allowed to cure.

If you are contemplating changing the timing chain on a Lotus twin cam engine, then be sure to ask if the chain construction has solid rollers and is a pre-stretched type.
Be aware that cheaper chains will stretch and this results in both camshafts being retarded.
Retarded camshafts result in reduced volumetric efficiency, poor combustion, poor idle and ultimately a reduction in engine power output.

ARP replacement for Torx fastener B911E1311F

The first 907 normally aspirated engines that Lotus manufactured used studs to secure the camshaft housings to the cylinder head.
This method of fastening was used up until the introduction of the later high compression (HC) engine in mid-year 1985.
At this point Lotus replaced the studs with an "anti-tamper fastener" in the form of an 8mm Torx headed bolt.
This Torx fastener, Lotus part number B911E1311F was used to secure the exhaust cam housing A912E2033K and inlet cam housing A912E2034K.
Both of the camshaft housings were used in versions of the 910 HC turbo-charged Esprit engine plus the 912 HC normally aspirated Excel engine.  
It is not unusual to experience problems when attempting to extract the Torx fasteners.
Extraction problems are often compounded and manifest themselves in the following ways -

1) Damaged Torx fastener head which is the result of the socket slipping
This is caused by poorly designed and ineffective head to socket interface.
The fastener head has conical flanks that disengage and slip when coated by a residual film of engine oil.

2) An excessive extraction torque is often experienced when attempting to remove the Torx fasteners.
This is caused by anaerobic sealant (used between the cam housing to head junction) seeping into the threaded fastener holes.
The surplus sealant acts as a thread-locker and is often found on the threaded section of the fasteners when they are removed.

3) Cylinder head threads are damaged or pull out whilst the cam housing is being installed.
This problem is caused by the fact that the Torx fasteners are too short for the application.
From experience there appears to be 3 or 4 installation cycles before thread failure occurs.

A worse-case scenario can be experienced when a cam housing threads pull out whilst installing a cylinder head on an Esprit engine whilst still in the vehicle.
Experience has shown It has been necessary follow a routine pre-installation procedure on every 910 HC and 912 HC cylinder head
This involves torque-testing every 8mm Torx fastener hole prior to final installation of the camshaft housings - see photo immediately below

Torque testing the threads IS NOT an absolute guarantee they will not fail during the next fastener installation.
Unfortunately there is no way of knowing how many times the cam housings have been removed and threads cycled.

One solution is to install Keysert locking thread inserts at all 16 threaded holes that the Torx screws locate in.
This remedy involves drilling, tapping, and then screwing in the Keysert followed by a punching operation to activate the 4 locking pins..
Estimated cost for doing this is $20/hole = $320 dollars which is more expensive than replacing the fasteners.
The solution to this problem is to install a slightly longer fastener to engage fully in the pre-existing threads within the cylinder head.
Changing to an after-market fastener with a small 10mm hex head solves both problems and ensures a quality result every time.

From experience, the later HC cylinder heads are machined so they may accept the original studs so there is usually plenty of thread depth.
However the thread depth should be check prior to installing and then torquing the longer fasteners.

Fastener kit (16 bolts) weight = 366 grams
