If you have ever tried to remove the gearbox in a Lotus Elite or Eclat, the you will soon realise that it is not a simple matter of just unscrewing the gearlever.
Once the lock tabs have been bent upwards then it should be straight forward to rotate the locking ring around in an nti-clockwise direction.
This is not the case and a large amount of force is required to turn the screw in base of the gear lever
Fron experience the locking tabs can still drag and interfere with this process
On top of this the access is limited awhich makes it difficult to get enough purchase on the screw in base.
Fortunately the base has carefully position flats every 90 degress.
To make this job as quick as possible and to locate on the correct part, Lotus Marques uses the custom tool shown in the photograph below
This tool makes removing the gear lever so much easier as it is screwed into a restricted recess
