QUESTION
I have a problem with my 87 Lotus Esprit HCi where the oil light is always on.
I have carefully checked the oil level and it is fine.
I called my local Lotus parts supplier in California and they said the sensor is in the dipstick and is no longer made plus they don't have one.
Do you have any suggestions?

ANSWER
Could you please contact your supplier and ask them for the part number of the dip-stick they refer to.
Unfortunately I have never seen a dip-stick with a sensor in it.
There is no mention of a special dip-stick in the Lotus parts list either.
Over the years I have worked on many HCi Esprits manufactured from 1987 to 1988 (all Bosch injected models).
What I am familiar with is the low oil pressure switch unit being faulty and illuminating the dash lamp.
This low pressure switch is located in the main oil gallery close to the starter motor.
The switch was manufactured by VDO but was made obsolete many years ago but there are suitable equivalent parts.
I would suggest trouble-shooting the low oil pressure switch to determine if it is faulty and permanently illuminating the dash lamp.
