QUESTION
My 89 Lotus Esprit HCi, (turbo charged and Bosch injected model) has recently developed a problem during hard acceleration.
The vehicle is fine when driving in traffic but as soon as the engine makes about 3 pounds of boost at about 4000rpm, the engine cuts out.
Have you any idea what might cause this?

ANSWER
This problem maybe caused by a hole in the waste-gate diaphragm which in turn will cause the pressure to over-boost.
If the turbo-charger pressure over-boosts, then this condition is usually detected by the over-boost switch.
The over-boost switch is in series with the inertia cut-out switch and if either of these switches are activated, then both fuel pumps are turned off.

Turning the fuel pumps off will shut the engine down and protect it from detonation problems caused by excessive boost pressure.
In this situation it would by wise to check if the waste-gate is operating to its design pressure specification of 9.5psi.
