QUESTION
I am still experiencing problems adjusting the clutch lever position on my Lotus Elan +2
My question is what to do with the return spring while check the clearance between the tapered conical nut and the clutch fork -- leave it in place or disconnect it?
If I leave it connected and completely back off the lock-nut and adjusting nut, the spring pulls the fork very far forward down the push rod.
On the other hand, if I disconnect it, I'm uncertain where to position the fork when setting the gap between it and the adjusting nut.

ANSWER
The clutch lever spring needs to be in place at all times to ensure the release bearing no longer contacts the clutch pressure plate assembly after the clutch pedal is released.
The gap between the lever and conical nut should be set by gently pushing against the lever opposing the spring tension. Alternatively the spring maybe removed.
Pushing the clutch lever away from the clutch slave cylinder will place the release bearing hard against the clutch pressure plate assembly.
With the the push-rod lock nut undone, the adjusting nut should be wound along the push-rod until the correct clearance of 0.080" is obtained.
At this point the lock nut should be tightened up against the back of the conical adjusting nut.
Providing all the correct clutch components have been installed, the clutch lever should be approximately 90 degrees to the gearbox input-shaft.
If the clutch lever is not in the correct position, then further investigation maybe required.
