QUESTION
Next I'm looking at overhauling the clutch master/slave cylinders and replacing the braided hose.
However, I'm a little confused (as always) What exactly is the "Esprit clutch master cylinder, 3/8" UNF outlet" listed on your website.
Is it a replacement for the S4's "A082J6147J"? My book tells me that my SE has a C079J6013F (pre- 92).
Can the S4's Master Cylinder be interchanged with the SE's? (if the hose is replaced at the same time, or is fluid displacement critical?)
My SE's thread size appears to be 7/16" and the manual shows no adaptors, unlike the S4's manual.
Does your master cyclinder include all parts? e.g. piston, seals, springs, etc, or is it just a basic shell?

ANSWER
These are all good questions you have asked
After working on numerous Esprits, it appears that Lotus used whatever clutch master cylinders they could obtain at the time.
A combination of master cylinders have been observed on various models and on identical models where the following configurations have been used -
a) Clutch master cylinder with 3/8" UNF threaded outlet
b) Clutch master cylinder with 3/8" UNF threaded outlet with steel adapter to 7/16" UNF
c) Clutch master cylinder with 7/16" UNF threaded outlet
d) Clutch master cylinder with 7/16" UNF threaded outlet with steel adapter to 3/8" UNF
With the passage of time and cylinders being replaced, there is no doubt non-genuine parts have been substituted which further complicates the matter.
The important factors when replacing the cylinder are - the bore diameter should be 5/8" and the volume should be the same.
Other components that can change are the length of the push-rod so the original component may need to be swapped over to the new cylinder
To answer your question - A082J6147J is interchangeable with C079J6013F.
However it maybe necessary to install an adapter to match the thread on the clutch hose fastener.
The clutch master cylinder supplied by Lotus Marques comes complete with piston, seal, spring, etc. and is ready to install.
This master cylinder is usually supplied with a 3/8"UNF outlet.
If you are looking to upgrade the existing clutch hose with a Teflon braided hose, then the correct 3/8"UNF banjo fastener can be supplied to match.
If you are replacing the existing clutch hose with a Teflon braided hose and have a 7/16"UNF outlet , then the correct banjo fastener can be supplied to match.
A comprehensive stainless steel braided clutch hose is available from Lotus Marques and is supplied with all the correct fasteners - please check master cylinder outlet thread before ordering.
