QUESTION
I'm currently working on a 1986 Lotus Esprit Turbo for a customer.
I need to remove the engine and at the same time would like to replace the timing belt, drive belts, water pump and anything else necessary while its out.
It will also require a spigot bearing, it did appear to be seized for a time but after some persistence and time soaking it has freed up, any parts for upgrades here would be needed.
I understand the water-pump may be a case of sending to you to rebuild, what is the turnaround on this service?
P.C. - Shellharbour, NSW
ANSWER
It is assumed the gearbox has been removed and its a Citroen C35 type and therefore has inboard brake discs
If the spigot bearing has seized, it may have damaged the spigot on the gearbox input shaft.
Can you look closely at the spigot detail and determine if its solid or later type that has a sleeve.
If the spigot bearing has seized, then from experience the Nylatron washer maybe missing from the spigot.
The Nylatron washer assists in excluding clutch debris and dirt from entering the spigot bearing (needle race)
If it is necessary to remove the engine, then it would be wise to change the front and rear crank oil seals plus both camshaft front and rear oil seals.
With the engine and gearbox removed it would be wise to examine all the clutch components to determine if everything is serviceable.
Providing the water pump is not badly corroded inside, the pump can be refurbished the same day it is received.
