QUESTION
Question for you - If a block is too thin how much can be taken out to re-sleeve a block.
Can you re-sleeve it to be a 1700 etc. Limitations?
D.R. - Pennant Hills, NSW.
ANSWER
This is a really good question you have raised.
In theory you could bore out a block to any size you desire and fit sleeves.
Problem number 1 The more parent metal you remove the weaker the block becomes.
This means the entire block can distort (including the cylinder walls)
Problem number 2 Removing parent metal often results in breaking into the water ways behind the cylinder wall.
This means that once a liner is installed, it is not fully supported by parent metal and the liner will have a limited life.
I would suggest its preferable to have a block with thick walls and smaller bores to impart greater reliability.
