QUESTION
I recently purchased a high torque starter from Lotus Marques to install in my 1983 lotus esprit turbo.
Putting in the wiring harness and I have 2 wires that go to the factory solenoid attached to the starter, one is the start wire (wr) the other (wy) goes to the cold start relay.
The new starter has only one connector. what should I do with the extra wire?
It appears I have a cold start wire on a carb car but I am not sure why.

ANSWER
If you look at the wiring diagram in the Lotus service manual you can see the following cable connections and colours
1) Heavy duty brown cable - battery connection
2) Medium duty brown cable - alternator connection
3) Medium duty brown cable - fan relay
All three cables should be secured to the 8mm stud on the starter motor
4) Light duty cable White and Yellow - cold start ballast resistor/ignition coil
5) Light duty cable White and Red - ignition switch start/crank
These two cables should be connected together and secured to the single solenoid terminal
As I cannot see your Esprit, I assume it has Lumention (contactless) electronic ignition
If this is the case then you have an integral ballast resistor built into the wiring loom system
You should have a ballasted ignition coil installed so be aware of this if you decide to upgrade the electronic ignition system
Some modern day electronic ignition systems usually expect to see a non-ballasted coil which has a primary coil resistance of 3.0 Ohms instead of 1.5 Ohms.
