QUESTION
I am currently working on a Lotus twin cam cylinder head that needs the worn cam follower sleeves replaced and the camshaft locating grooves need to be welded and re-machined.
Do you know what the width of these grooves should be?
I have checked nearly all my camshaft locating bosses and they would appear to be around the 0.240” wide, and I estimate the end play will be around a few thou to 10 thou.
Does this agree with any sizes you may have ?

ANSWER
Checking a brand new cylinder head here in my workshop, the cam location grooves measure 0.0250" in width
I have never seen engineering drawings from the Lotus Factory for the cams or cylinder head but 0.010" end-float would appear to be reasonable
Maintaining all the various dimensions/tolerance between both the head and cams would require careful positioning of the location groove when machining a welded repair
