QUESTION
I am carrying out routine maintenance on the Lotus Marques CV driveshafts fitted on my Lotus Elan 2+2
All the parts have been dismantled, cleaned and inspected so I am ready to repack the CV joints with Moly grease.
Is there a specific amount that you would recommend for each CV joint (mL or grams) ?
R.C - Melbourne, Australia
ANSWER
The recommended amount of grease to pack a CV joint is 80 grams and Castrol Spheerol LMM grease is ideal for this application
This is a heavy duty grease formulated with molybdenum disulphide plus additional EP (Extreme Pressure) addatives
The best way to do this is in two stages, applying grease on the back-side before installing the joint on the shaft
Once the joint has been installed on the shaft then apply more grease to the other face
As a useful tip, use a small paint brush to push the grease into the casing grooves that the ball bearings reside in
