QUESTION.
I have a Lotus twin cam engine in a Mark 1 Ford Escort and the water pump is leaking.
Could you tell me how much this would cost to repair or replace please.
ANSWER.
Because it's not possible know exactly what you are going to find when dismantling a water pump, it is only reasonable providing indicative costs which would be $150 to $350
These costs are dictated by what components need replacing and if any machining operations need to be carried out.
Many twin cam pumps have seem numerous operating hours without corrosion inhibitors and are nearing the end of their service life.
From experience, there is often a significant amount of internal corrosion that causes porosity problems and subsequent leaks
Lotus Marques has found it necessary to pressure test all Lotus twin cam pumps prior to commencing work to determine if they are viable to rebuild
You really don't know what you are dealing with until the pump is dismantled and the internals can be inspected - then it is possible to provide a firm quotation
The rebuild service provided by Lotus Marques now includes an upgrade to incorporate a ceramic seal which greatly extends the pump service life
On completion of the rebuild, a quality check is carried out by pressurising the pump to 50psi
This last and final check is to make sure the pump does not leak once its installed in the customer's Lotus twin cam engine
