QUESTION.
I own a Lotus Elan +2 but I don't know much about the history of the engine in the car but it is a 130/5 big valve.
What fuel do you recommend?
Should I be using any additives in my Lotus twin cam engine?
S.V. - Adelaide
ANSWER.
With regards to the fuel for your Lotus Elan +2
The standard compression ratio is 10.35:1
If the engine has been re-bored or if the cylinder head has been skimmed, then the compression ratio will be even higher
If you have the standard specification cams, then the engine will struggle on 98 Octane unleaded fuel and most likely ping on hot days
If left unchecked, pinging/detonation can cause significant damage to the pistons and/or piston rings
Lotus Marques recommends using a fuel octane booster such as Nulon-Pro which is readily available from your local Repco store.
