ANSWER
From experience of restoring Lotus cars, the most effective method for stripping paint from your Lotus Esprit, is with plastic bead blasting.
This is a slow but gentle process that gets into all the most difficult spaces but produces excellent results.
Removing the paint from any fibreglass body vehicle will reveal previous repairs and may high-light air-bubbles in the gel-coat.
From experience, trying to strip paint by hand or sander is just too slow.
