QUESTION
I have just taken my Elan S4 DHC for a short drive and returned home.
I then jacked up the rear to check the rear suspension and brakes etc.
On touching the differential housing, I was surprised to find it was very warm.
Is it normal for differential to get hot?
I.W. - Melbourne
ANSWER
Yes, it is normal for the differential casing to get hot.
As the internal lubricant splashes against all the internal components, it conducts heat whilst providing lubrication.
As a matter of interest, some of the Lotus Elan 26R race cars were fitted with a small electric pump and oil cooler to reduce the differential operating temperature.
