The type M00 Elan was produced in what has subsequently become known as 'Series 1' form, between January 1990 and July 1992, and in 'S2' form from July '94 to August '95.
S1 models were produced in naturally aspirated (N.A.), non-catalyst turbo, and catalyst turbo form, with driver's side supplementary inflatable restraint (S.I.R.) available for the USA and some other LHD markets.
USA type S.I.R. equipped cars used a chassis differing in construction detail at the front, with a correspondingly modified body using a marginally extended nose. The rear body section on these cars also differed in the construction and the attachment of the rear aerofoil, a feature which is referred to as a 'stage 2 ' body.
Note that the N.A. model was produced in RHD U.K. form only, with a total of 129 built, whereas approximately 3,726 turbo (S.E.) cars were produced in various configurations for worldwide markets.
All Elan S2 models are non-USA type catalyst turbos, of which there are approximately 800 cars.
The only major specification change-point is that between S1 and S2 models, but some of the more significant running changes are listed below;
1990 Model Year introduction: January 1990. VIM L 6100
Introduction of 'pod' type single pivot headlamp mechanism: June 1990. VIN L 6300
- The 'frame and flap' or 'opera glass' type headlamp mechanism incorporating separately pivoted headlamp carriers and cover flaps, was replaced by a system using unitary rear pivoted pods similar to those used on Esprit and Excel models.
1991 Model Year introduction: October 1990. VIM M 6000
- No corresponding specification changes.
Change of rear suspension anti-lift angle: January 1991. VIM M 6644
- Angle of rear lower wishbone changed from 5° to 2.5°.
